John Amos (December 27, 1939 – August 21, 2024) was an iconic American actor, best known for two unforgettable roles: the adult Kunta Kinte in the groundbreaking miniseries Roots and the strong-willed James Evans Sr. on the CBS hit series Good Times. His television career was wide-ranging, including appearances on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, a recurring role as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on The West Wing, and playing Washington, D.C.'s Mayor Ethan Baker in The District. Over a career spanning five decades, Amos also graced the Broadway stage and appeared in numerous films.
Amos earned both a Primetime Emmy Award nomination and an NAACP Image Award nomination. On the big screen, he carved out memorable supporting roles in films like The Beastmaster (1982), Coming to America (1988), Lock Up (1989), Die Hard 2 (1990), and Coming 2 America (2021). Before his acting career, Amos played college football at Colorado State University and even had a brief stint with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 1967 offseason as part of the American Football League. A man of many talents, John Amos left a lasting mark on both the entertainment and sports worlds.
