Police investigating reports of a shot fired at a taxi carrying Ian Hislop have found no evidence of gunfire. Instead, "urgent CCTV and forensic examinations" pointed to a mechanical fault that shattered the rear window, according to a Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
The incident occurred in Soho, central London, on Tuesday morning. Fortunately, neither Mr Hislop nor the driver, who initially reported the incident, was injured.
Mr Hislop, editor of Private Eye, expressed his gratitude, saying, "Thanks to everyone for their concern—it is greatly appreciated."
Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event.
Mr. Hislop's statement added: “I can confirm there was an incident in a taxi yesterday, during which a rear window shattered, and the police are investigating.
“They initially considered the possibility of a shot being fired but have since suggested there may be a more innocent explanation for the event.”
The Have I Got News For You star, who has edited Private Eye since 1986, extended his thanks to the officers and “everyone who reached out."
It was The Guardian that first reported the cab driver's belief that the vehicle had been shot at. The taxi has since been taken for further examination, according to the Met.
